PPC DIY or: can everybody do it?

It's fairly easy to set up a PPC campaign in Google.

All you have to do is create an AdWords account, submit your payment (credit card) information, agree to pay the $5 one-time setup fee, write an ad real quick, start your PPC campaign, sit back and wait for the sales and the money to pour in.

You didn't really think it was that easy, did you?
In fact, this is the best way to waste your advertising budget in no time.

Working with Pay-Per-Click is like having kids, pets and expensive cars: They need lots of care, proper maintenance and constant supervision. If you don't give them the attention they need, they'll get out of hand really quickly (and then it usually gets expensive).

Do your homework before you start

You can't just wake up one morning and decide to set up a PPC campaign from scratch after you finish the morning paper and expect to be done by lunchtime. Unless you plan on having your campaign fail.

Market research, your target audience, the competition, your budget, the structure of your PPC account, your keywords, the copy of your ads, the content of your website, the amount of time you are willing to invest in it — they all affect the performance of your campaign. They (and then some) determine if it will be successful or a waste of money.
